Sado Persecution
佐渡法難会
This puja is held on the day Nichiren Shonin was exiled to Sado Island after the Tatsunokuchi Buddhist memorial service, one of the Four Great Dharma Pujas of Nichiren Shonin.
Although his execution at Tatsunokuchi was cancelled, Nichiren Shonin was exiled to Sado Island.
On October 28, Bun’ei 8, he arrived on Sado, where it was very cold.
However, the stronger the persecution became, the more his faith in the Lotus Sutra grew stronger.
In February of the following year, during his hard life on Sado Island, he wrote “Kaimokusho,” an important book for his disciples and followers.
I shall be the pillar of Japan.
I shall be the eye of Japan.
I must become a great ship of Japan
In this book, he renewed his determination to propagate the Lotus Sutra.
In April of the following year (1273), he wrote “Kanjin Honzon Sho” (Essay on the True Parents of the Lotus Sutra), in which he explained what we should have faith in.
